dvi cable vs. vga cable

the dvi cable didn't come with my new monitor and i was wondering what the advantages are of using a dvi cable versus a regular vga cable... i have to plug the vga cable into the monitor and use a vga to dvi converter for my video card. will this make a difference?

Honestly its arguable. Some people will say it makes a HUGE difference where others will tell you it makes none. The sites I read about seem to say the same thing. Some yes some no. I had VGA going into my 37" LCD and switched to DVI and I notice less ghosting in FEAR myself. Could be my imagination compensating for the $12 I spent on the cable and $5 on shipping but I'm satisfied :D
 
The only difference I've honestly seen is when you don't run at the LCD's native resolution. VGA cables can't automatically fill the screen with the picture and must be adjusted. The monitor can sometimes do this, but it's not always correct. As for clearity, though, I can't tell a bit of difference between VGA or DVI at 1280x1024...
 
yea... maybe ill do a test, and take come pics with my camera.. just for fun, and i'll make a thread about it if i care enough...
i'll have to buy the cable though, will they have it at circuit city or best buy?

I don't think that taking a picture of the monitor with a camera will yield very good test results. ;)

haha, well ive got a $500 still image camera, duno how much better it gets but its pretty damn good.. and taking a screenshot completly passes by how the quality of the image is on the screen, so this seems like the best way to do it...
ill have to get a video camera and see what difference it makes in quake 4 or oblivion or something...
 
Honestly its the sensativeity of your own eyes. Some people cannot see the difference, some people can. I say...why NOT? You would spend a couple dollars more to get a 7900GT rather then a 7900GS for more frames and better quality, why not spend 20 bucks on a cable to do the same. The monitor is the only thing you look at. You don't look at processors and stuff. It's worth it to spend your dime on a monitor, cable, and graphics card.
 
Does your Monitor have a DVI input?
if not, dont bother, a different cable wont make any difference at all.
if it has, it will make a difference, since usually with monitors who have DVI and VGA, the VGA is quite crappy. ( this is my personal expierience tough.. but those monitors had both cables atached to it )
 
DVI is just a digital connection versus an analog which is VGA. When choosing a DVI cable there are different types, the more expensive ones have more bandwidth, ie pixels per inch.

An example would be, a resolution of 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz requires a cable that has the ability to withstand a 47Mhz connection.

There are single link and dual link DVI cables, and single links are cheaper and capable of support HD connections.

If you are running a super high resolution, like 1600 x 1400 @ 75hz it would require a cable that could support 168Mhz, which might need a dual link cable.
