DVI to HDMI?

I was wondering if DVI to HDMI actually converts the picture to HDMI since the initial socket is DVI. Anyone know what I mean? I want to know since Im planning on getting a 1080p HDMI monitor that will melt my eyeballs off. THx for the help! Also, is 1080p and HDMI taken advantage of in PC games? If I could only have one, which should I go for? (1080p or HDMI).

im not sure if i know what you mean... i think you are confused. HDMI is only a video cable; it only transfers digital singal from input to monitor, regardless of the resolution (1080p, 1440x900, etc.). as long as the DVI signal is digital, it should work. you wont be getting sound from it.

No, since DVI-D and HDMI are both digital, the signal is carried across without any conversion. Audio will not be carried since DVI does not support audio transmission so you will have to use an alternate source for your audio, if you want to stay digital then an optical toslink cable would work, or just a normal digital coax.
