Dx10 in an older mobo?

Am I right in assuming that there are certain new mobo's which support Dx10?
Do you have to have a Dx10 mobo for a Dx10 card to work in it?
If so, what would happen if you placed a Dx10 card in a slightly older mobo?
Would it function slower? Not at all?

Many thanks

The motherboard is independent of the video card. As long as the motherboard has a PCIe 16x slot (I'm assuming all DX10 cards are PCIe) you can use a DX10 card in it.

Just to restate what the above two posters said, it's not the motherboard that either does or doesn't support DX10 video cards, it's that you have the correct interface for the DX10 cards. If you have an AGP 4x/8x or PCI-E x16 slot, you can have DirectX10. Of course assuming you are using Vista.

Ah! So, lets see if I have this right. Lets use an 8800gtx for an example (which is a Dx10 supporting card right?) I could use this card on XP with dx9? would it be severly hampered? or will the card still be high performance? (in comparison to other dx9 cards) Thanks for the replies so far! :D

It would still smoke all DX9 cards, but you just can't use the dx10 graphics options.
