Why is everyone springing for the first of the DX10 cards like the 8800GTS when the DX10 games havent even come out yet, and when they do, the DX10 cards will be like $100 dollars less with the same or better performance. Why?

Please dont say because if you wait you will never get anything, because the wait is like three months, and a 7900GS can easily handle anything until the DX10 games.

And does DX10 perform all out for XP, or are all of the features not full?
 
There may be no DX10 games yet(I may be wrong about that) but the DX10 cards like the 8800 perform extremely well...and some people have a little too much money and like the have the latest and greatest.

The 8800 performs extremely well in DX9 games, it outperforms even 2x 7900GTX's in SLI.

It's true that DX10 isnt released yet, and that the G80 may be horrible performers in DX10 games, but it's a chance you have to take, but most likely they will perform very well in games.

The 7900GS can play games on high, possibly highest settings. But if you run a high resolution, you would need a better performing card.
 
Unreal Tournament 2007 is going to be released on Jan 5th 2007. Vista in late Jan. More games to follow. March 9th Hellgate London. Q1 2007 Supreme Commander. But you will have to wait and see. But I have an 8800GTS in my friends computer with an E6300 @2.9 and @ 1680x1050 in Company of Heroes with everything turned on high the min frame rate is 29.5 sooooo I'd say the 8800GTS or the 8800GTX is worth it to play on high settings with no choppiness. Just my humble opinion.

nobody answered my first question, why doesnt everyone wait like 2-6 months for the newer, better, and cheaper DX10 cards when the DX10 games actually come out, and save a lot of money while getting the same or better performance than the 8800GTS?

And what do you think the price and performance of a DX10 card will be in 6 months?

My friend, suppose that someone now have an old video card and want to replace it with a new card. If this person want to spend $400 then what is the best video card for that price ? of course the 8800GTS is the best.

If we tell this person to wait 6 months then he will play games with his old video card on low setting for 6 months. So, there is no reason to wait if someone really needs to replace his video card now

Of course, the performance and the price will be better after 6 months, and if you wait for another 6 months there will much better cards.

So, if you really need a good video card for a cheap price then just wait for 10 years, and I'm very sure that you will be able to get a video card 10 times stronger than 8800GTX for less than $100

I think you can last fine on medium settings for 3 months.

um, the 10 year comment was stupid.

and here is my argument:

well, it is common sense, the 8800s are the first cards of its kind, the first thing of its any kind is 1)overpriced because its the only one 2)new cards will come out, lower prices and more bang for buck 3) in 6 months much better choice, performance and price

and read this

more dx10 card (more futureproof)
maybe there will be a new cpu war,
currently it's obvious what to get: intel & 8800 GTX
but if you wait 6 monts, you will have much more choice, and more bang for the buck, and more futureproof"

Why do people buy brand new ferrari's when in 6 months - 1 year there will be a new one with a better spec? Because they have the money to do so and dont need to follow what someone tells them to do.

And besides, when the 2nd generation DX10 cards come out, no doubt you will say "wait a few months because some new cards will be out that will be even better"

EDIT: I think the first reply from that forum made sense
the prices always drop and there is always new stuff
might as well upgrade now and get it over with

i think you didnt read every single other comment, and those ferraris arent the very very first of their kind, are they? I think the first ferrari ever made was far inferior than the second and third, and the third wasnt as inferior as the fourth and fifth as it was superior to the first. So when the first DX10 cards come out, overpriced, and not futureproof, w/o even any DX10 games out, in three months there will actually be a choice, with much better priced cards and much better performance, undoubtedly. Even if you have the money, you arent smart to buy something that is the very first almost prototype of its kind.

They may be the first on the market, but most people are buying them because they are insanely good video cards by todays standards. It also allows you to use HDR and FSAA, as well as having AA not cause as much of a performance hit as every other gen card.

Granted when DX10 and DX10 games are out, there will be more of a variety to choose from.

Because the top of the line cards then will be the same, if not more then the G80 is now. Last I heard the R600 was going to be even more expensive then the G80.

Then in 3 months, why not wait another 3 months for an even better card, when the games take full advantage of DX10. Its a never ending situation.

You're asking us to prove your opinion wrong or to prove ours right. This is hard because they are "opinions". People by the cards now because they either:

A) Want one.

B) Are upgrading and it's the best out now.

C) Can't wait or don't want to.

Like for instance I wasn't going to upgrade anytime soon but lately my X1900XT has started artifacting badly and is seeming to overheat at stock clocks. Even underclocked it's having issues. It's only 5 months old but I'm already considering upgrading as I play games daily. Not much point in waiting if I can't play games now huh? That would be my reason. I have a 512mb card that cost $300 I'm not going to drop anything less than that so I might as well get the GTS or GTX. If something crazy better comes out then I may consider that then but who knows. We can what if anything to death :P .

Lastly I hope if you do decide to wait that you get a great card for a great deal my friend! :D
 
why thanks! yeah i am waiting until march to get my card, I know there will be better deals. And I see all of your points, but the prices will undoubtedly be much less with much more competition.
