e-GeForce 6800 GS & HD graphics

I have recently purchased a new LCD tv and when I watched a movie through my computer I'm not impressed with the graphics regardless if it's from a movie on my hard drive @4.6 gigs (files size) or from an actual DVD compared to the quality of video I get on some channels through my rabbit ears (I don't have cable). My questions: is my graphics card not HD? Or is it that the movies/DVDs I have are not HD? Should I expect less graphics quality due to a file size of 4.6 gigs? If I acquired a movie said to be HD or Blu-ray, do I need an actual HD or Blu-ray compatible video card to display ANY graphics at all or will it just be lesser quality? Should I expect this type of performance out of my graphics card?

My computer is hooked to my TV via DVI to HDMI.

TIA, I hope this isn't too obvious of a question, I haven't been in the techno-loop lately.

Its most likely your graphics card which is considerably outdated. You could upgrade to a 7800 or 8600 for cheap and see a considerable difference.

You may also need to calibrate your tv correctly. Go in and edit your colors and such to make sure your getting the best picture.

Plus another thing is.... dvd's arent high def, for high def you would need a high definition medium such as bluray, and a way to play them, such as a blu ray drive.

Good point bomber.

To OP,
What exactly looks bad about the quality? I would assume you already knew dvd was not high def, but never know :P

The 6800gs should have enough horsepower to play high def movies i would assume, since it is still quite a bit more powerful than the integrated options available today, and they can play blueray.
