I have overclocked an E4300 to about 2.4Ghz, then when i overclock it more, it underclocks to 1.78GHz.. why.?

Questions:
1. after overclock an certain amound why does the cmoputer underclock?
2. Could someone lead me to an good HSF for a LGA775 mobo?
3. Is there an type of thermal paste than Arctic Silver 5?
4. How far will I get on overclocking an E4300? (abit IP-95 motherboard)

1. likely because it has reached its ceiling and knows it, so it reacts as such to prevent you from frying your chip.

2. Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme - $65 at newegg. the best if not one of the best air coolers. tall tower design, make sure your case has room, aside from that it is excellent.

3. why choose anything less than the best?

4. no one can tell you that. every system is different. even an exact replica of your system can be stable at one clock while yours is not. luck of the draw when you buy your parts.

Is it actually showing that's it's underclocked in the BIOS? It's probably just reduced the multiplier to save energy when idle.

If you handle your OC well and have 667mhz+ RAM then you can reach 3.0ghz+ with that chip.

i hope its your mombo, i dont want that to happen to my next processor, nforce 680i is good overclocker but hey at least you have a e6600

As hermeslyre hinted at, your processor underclocks when it is idle so that you can save energy. You most likely still are overclocking, but you just looked at it when it was idle, so it had been automatically underclocked.

No no, when I overclock and save and restart my compy, at boot up it will say : Intel E4300 @ 1.78GHz...

And Impluse , I made a mistake there. Is there any thermal compound BETTER than Arctic silver 5?

I believe it's because when you try to get it higher then 2.4, it wont successfully boot, so it restores everything back to default. You need to start increasing the voltage and lowering the ram speeds.

OMEGA - I will do that when I get my RAM modules and Video card... Currently using DDR333 64MB (from my "Overclocking Unichrome Graphics") and integrated unichrome graphics... probably cause my RAM stinks. Ordered Video card + 1gig RAM yesterday. On Step 3. Estimated delivery 2-3days.
