I deleted speedfan and am now using pcwizard2007,great program. I noticed up in the corner it displays current settings and my processor(e6600) is running at 1624.97mhz, if it is under load it jumps up to 2334.00. is this normal? both cores are being recognized as per pcwiz.

Well, during Idle times your CPU may lower its clock speed since nothing is being used. This keeps the CPU nice and cool and and when it needs the power it'll go to its normal speed to take on those hard to do tasks. so basically when there is nothing to do, its rests. When a huge task happens, its pumped up and running at its normal speed. That's my guess...

i know laptop processors have had that function for a while now

it makes sense that they've adapted it to desktop processors now, since the prescotts had the bad rep of being unreasonably hot

Amd calls it cool & quiet.. I didn't know intel processors used the technology too. Shows how ignorant i am. :)

edit: :(

well, it should be discrete

i don't think you'd get any performance increase by disabling it

just a higher power bill, most likely

mine stays at a constant speed all the time. but an e6600 i worked with with the 680i read a ton lower, but that was because i was using windows server 2003 as the OS which cant support any of those apps.

what kind of mobo do you have?

used to

i don't recall my cpu lowering itself before today, i think it used to stay at one speed. i was in the bios messing around but dont think i turned anything on or off. i have an asus p5be mobo, what is going on? is there anyone else with a c2de6600 that is doing this?

speedstep

I just went back into my bios and checked and in "cpu config" if i go to the bottom of the screen and then press down arrow again there is an option to enable/disable Intel Speedstep. I disabled it and loaded xp but cpu was still at 1.6, so went back into bios and checked, speedstep was/is disabled but yet again I am runnig at 1.6. bios says"enableing speedstep allows OS to choose cpu speed, disable speedstep allows cpu to run at default setting(2.44) Whats up here?
