E6850 Running Hot

I just built my first computer with an E6850 dual core and when I ran a temperature monitor (Asus Probe), it said my processor was running 85C idle, 97C load. Now, I'm not an expert on this subject, but I would think at those temperatures, some sort of safety would kick in and shut down the computer. So I tested another monitor (SpeedFan 3.34) and it said the same thing.

Thinking that both monitors were faulted, I put my computer under load, then restarted and checked the temperature in the BIOS. Again, it read 97C. Is my processor actually running this hot?

I have checked to see if the heat sink was installed correctly and all the pins are showing in the back of the motherboard.

What thermal paste did you use? Also, I've heard that some CPUS have some kinda transparent cover thing on it, did you remove it?

There should be a setting for the automatic shutdown temperature threshold in BIOS. How high is it set?

well within a few seconds of the load taken off, your temperatures would return to normal, so it is impossible to check load temps in the bios. use speedfan and prime95 at the same time and then tell us what your temps say.

I did not use any thermal paste, instead I'm just using the stock fan's thermal pad, and there was no clear plastic that I saw. I also did not see a shutdown temperature in the BIOS, but have read from other forums that it is around 75C by default.

I downloaded Prime95 and the temperature jumped up to 100-101C.

Now, I have no stability problems. In fact, the day after I got this installed, I played WoW for six continuous hours without a single problem. I've also spent several hours playing other games, and not one thing has gone wrong. Actually, I'm very happy with the system, save for the CPU temperatures.

EDIT: I do want to stress that the temperatures -are- in Celsius.

ah what we thought was that there was no thermal compound on it whatsoever. the stock thermal paste (they dont use pads any more) works just fine, that is not your problem at all.

the shutdown temperature is not in the bios, it is actually a feature built straight into the chips, so that if a temperature above 75C is detected the computer automatically shuts down or throttles speed severely to cool down.

so, your processor in all likelihood is not running at nearly 100C, as this would almost definetely destroy it. more likely, your motherboards giving you false reports.

Thanks for the input, a false reading always was the most likely answer to this problem, but this is my first build, though I've helped friends before but even then, this is the first time with an Intel processor. I'm just going to ignore the heat, maybe get some better chassis fans just to be on the safe side.
