Hey guys, first post here.

I'm looking to upgrade my cpu to 'Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8400' from Newegg. I've been doing some searching to see whether my xps400 is compatible with it. Here is my everest home edition info about my motherboard, chipset, and bios. So far, searches on google haven't given me a definitive answer.

Suggestion System BIOS is more than 2 years old. Update it if necessary.

Any help or suggestions on a processor upgrade would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The xps400 only has a 945p chipset which doesn't support core 2 duo's, so you are stuck with pentium D up to the 840 3.2 ghz.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I'll look for a new motherboard that can fit in the xps 400 chassis. Any recommendations?

I would recommend building a whole new system which requires a new case and power supply as you'll run into less trouble that way. Most dell cases have proprietary case connections to the motherboard and unless you buy a board directly from dell, you might not be able to get all the cables connected.

Buy a new (and better) case. BTX is a pain in the ass.

Yea, dell is a POS. I come to realize this after recent research lol. Bought the xps 400 for college 4 years ago.

Now I'll look into customizing my own rig. Will be my first endeavor of the sort. So i'm guessing case/power supply/mobo and I'm set. I want to recycle my ram/hard drive/graphics card. May be some more compatibility issues, but I know where to come to if I need help;) Thanks again for the help!

You'll probably want to get faster ram since you either have only 533 or 667 mhz right now. If you insist on the E8400 then this is what I would get. You would also need a new operating system as you won't be able to use the recovery cd from the dell on the new computer.

You can pick the case.

However, I would recommend going with either an I5 or I7 build, which woudl be more full proof. But just let us know what your budget is and we can go from there.

Thank you for your recommendations Johnb. For now, I am going to wait awhile before I build a new rig. The processor upgrade isn't necessary for me right now because I just wanted it to play games. There are other things I should be worrying about like finding a job so I will have money to build a sweet rig. I will be back for recommendations on parts when I have money. Thanks again guys!
