ECC or NON-ECC memory

Hi all,
I have the following setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
1 gig of Cruical memory
Hiper Modular R 580w psu
LG 16x Super Multi DVD/CD Rewriter
Thermaltake Shark black pc case

and I'm looking to upgrade the memory, as i am now using a 64bit OS. I do push this workstation/come server hard, hence the memory upgrade.

Should I got for

2gigs of Cruical DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • ECC • DDR400

or

2gigs of Cruical DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400

which one of these will give me the best.

Non-ECC would be best. ECC memory is designed for servers that cant have any errors in their memory, however when it has ECC the memory runs slower.

So if your computer is going to be a server, get ECC. If it's just a personal or gaming computer, get Non-ECC.

I would really look into getting CL2 or CL2.5 memory, instead of CL3.
 
Also, if I'm not mistaken, most "regular" motherboards can't use ECC. I thought I saw that somewhere, but I'm probably wrong...
 
No The_Other_One I think you're right. Most motherboards that are designed for home use (us REGULAR people lol) won't even accept NON-ECC memory. You'll probably get an error on boot-up at POST that says something about a bad memory timing or something. You need to have one that specifically advertises it takes ECC registered memory modules.
 
the bios may have an option to disable ecc then you can use ecc memory without ecc. then when u need it turn it back on. it only corrects 1 bit so its still useless if theres more than 1 bit of error.

I think you mean it wont accept ECC, and if you want to use ECC you need a motherboard that supports it.
