EEE PC 900 or 700?

I'm going to college in August. I am going to be bringing the PC in my sig up with me. What I need is an ultra portable laptop that i can just take to class and the library etc. just to type and access the internet from.

I don't need anything really powerful because I have my desktop for that. The EEE PC has really caught my attention lately, but with the 900 coming in at twice the amount as the 700, I am kind of stuck.

For basic typing and internet access should I get the 700 or the 900? The concern that I have is that the screen on the 700 is not even big enough to view a web page. Is the low cost worth the hassle? And as far as a 2G SDD, thats an iPod shuffle. If I am only using it for typing and internet, I really wont need any more than 2G though, will I?

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot:)

Also if you have any other suggestions in a comparable price range, let me know.

Thanks again.

my lil sister has the 700 linux version and it's perfectly fine for typing(it comes with open office pre-loaded) and internet surfing. but, if you got big hands, it'll be hard to type. i heard the 900's would be a little bigger. i hold the EEEPc as if it were a gameboy, i have a big hands.

17 and going to college?

Yeah, I'm young, I turn 18 in July.

Yeah, thats kind of what I was worried about also, I'm 6'2" and have big hands. Do you think that it would be too small, or just something that I would have to get used to?

It's really too small. normally, i type with my hands on ASDF for the left, and JKL; for the right hand. But on the EEEPc, it's very cramped that's why I type like I'm holding a Gameboy.

as for storage problems, there's a SD card slot for expandable memory.

Do you seriously just thumb it like you're texting or something? Thats really funny, lol. So you think that I should look into something other than an EEE PC?

yup. i thumb it. :P

what's your budget for a laptop? i'll help you find one that's portable. ;)

It really can't be more expensive than the 900, which is $550, under $300-$400 would be ideal though. Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it.

hmmm. just a suggestion. you could go down to your local store and try out the EEEPc and see if you're comfoartble with it.

hehe. well laptops under 400 would be impossible to find. but i can find you some under 550. and the smallest one you can get would be a 14 inch, which is still pretty portable. ;)

here are some that i found and it'll be fine for just typing and surfing.

gonna add some more to the list. i got to go out for lunch first. i'm @ the office atm. hehe.

Were you referring to the 7" or the 15.4"? If the 7", wouldn't I run into the same keyboard size issues as with the EEE PC?

Thanks a lot for your help everyone

nah. just saw a simliar size to the EEEPC. (ignore my slight retardation.)

but, if you'd like to shell out the cash, the last link i posted is the best one for your budget. ;)

You could try looking at the HP mini laptop. They claim that the keyboard size are only slightly smaller than a normal keyboard. (92% the regular size)

From HP Website itself:

Though again, the drawback is the small screen size. I guess it takes time to get used to it.

Frankly, I don't think the keyboard size is that much of a problem : you get used to it. On the contrary, 9" versus 7" is a huge improvement. I would not hesitate getting the 900.
