EL Wire

Anybody use EL wire? How does it get its power exactly? I've been wondering because I may want to use it since it's really flexible.

Thank you for your help.

EL wire is called EL wire because it satands for ElectroLuminescent, this means you apply power to it and it glows. It has one molex at one end, then its just like a wire, you can route it around anywhere you want it.

Ok, cool. So it takes nothing but a 12V Dc current?

nope, nothing else, im sure you could run it at 5v, it might be a bit dimmer.... as long as it doesnt go through an inverter it should be fine at 5v too. So yeh, it does mean if you got an AC to DC converter you could run EL wire out of your mains sockets....

Ok. I'm actually using this for my car mainly, all I have to do it cut the molex connector off and have the wires go to the fuse box. I might use it in the computer too though.

Thanks for your help Dragon.

Using it in your car?? What, are you a pimp or something? Or do you own a Civic? lol

I never knew what el wire was. I just learned something else new today. Gotta love these forums.

No, he just wants to put some under the seats of his car, so you can see a faint "glow" during the night and such.

They had a car at a local audio place that had similar lighting, and it looked really nice. And no, it didnt look like a "pimped out" car either :P

Sorry, but those pix make the car look retarded. I wouldn't be caught dead in a car like that....???

I can see it looking neat inside a computer though.

No problem, a mate did that to his cr, not quite the same, he used cathodes to achieve footwell lighting, routed some LED toggle switches to the dash, looked pretty sweet afterwards. He also put UV ones in the boot, not sure why, he doesnt have a sub or anything in there, he just thought it would be cool, lol...

So yeh, straight connections to the fuse box, or any spur off of the 12v ring, if its easier you could always take a spur off of the feed to your headunit or anything else in there for that matter

No probs, dragon

I have a Chen Ming aluminum case. They make the Antec chassis'. Awesome case, especially to work on. mmmmm. I have an Antec sitting here too, and they look identical. I can't remember the part numbers though. :(

Yeah EL wires are nice. Seen it on many many things. Cheapy look, some use them for creating cheap angel eyes. They are quite effective, and affordable too.
