Email header question

I made a post on craigslist.org and what do you know, I get bombed by spammers...

So I decide I want to see the IP address of a certain spammer, just out of curiosity. I look at the mail headers on gmail and none of the IP addresses correspond to a particular user. I looked up all the IPs and they were either from craigslist or google. Not useful for reporting of spammers.

Now craigslist has an email anonymizing service where you can post your email in scrambled form to protect your privacy, but other than that I don't know why I can't see the originating IP.

Any help would be cool, thanks guys again.

Most mail headers IP's get lost on the way. And spammers are clever guys, they use proxy servers and VPN's to cloak their own address. The best thing to do here is flagging each message as SPAM. Gmail is good at catching spam.

So the route the packets take through the proxy server wouldn't necessarily show up in the header? Odd..

Headers are kind of a useless tool if they display incomplete info imo
