email security

Just have a few questions regarding Yahoo Email

I think my account could have been hacked into. My password never stopped working though but I still made a new harder one. Is it possible(if somebody is really good) that they could still have access to my email account? I had a few emails disappear and a few more come through hours after being sent.

Or is the rule of thumb being "if your computer gets hacked the hacker HAS TO change the password"......which basically lets owner know

or could someone have continued access without me knowing?

Hotmail and Yahoo email accounts get hacked on a daily basis. The only thing you can do is change your password to where its more secure. Use special symbols, capital letters, numbers. The longer the password, the harder to crack.

Yeah but lets pretend someone gained access, my question is can they keep this access AFTER I switch my password again?

No. They'd have to force crack your password again.

Now what is force hacking? Is that very difficult? Because one person I have in mind is a programmer. So basically if I have a real good hacker targeting me can they pretty much routinely hack into my email once they have the address?

Also I gave this "programmer" access to my computer from his own device and he took control of my computer/mouse and was supposedly looking for viruses and installing software roughly 3-4 years ago for me. Is it possible that he did something where he would have 24/7 access to my computer? Even if I performed system restores after that? Could he have done anything to hinder the security of my computer?

The more complex the password, the more difficult it is to hack. Always use uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols in your password, and don't use dictionary words.

If he had access to your computer, he could have installed lots of malicious programs. Since this was 3-4 years ago, I don't think a system restore would help as I don't believe you can go back that far. You could always do a format and reinstall.

But is that it you would say? Just malicious programs? I remember uninstalling everything he put in fwiw.

I really don't see what's the problem...

1. If you think he put malicious software on your computer then:

Erase your HDD with KILL DISK and reinstall an operating system.

2. If you are afraid that someone will delete your mails then:

Store them locally on your HDD as soon as the new mail message(s) arrives.Just have a program that runs 24/7 and as soon new message arrives to you,it will be stored to your computer locally on it's HDD rather than staying on the server...

3. If you are afraid that somebody will hack your password then:

Have another security mail or even better a sellphone number which you will use to request a temporary password change in the case someone changes your password and then you will use that temporary password to access your mail account and then change that temporary password to a new one...

And remember...everything can be hacked...everything.
This is why I never EVER hold any of my sensitive data,(wether they are mails or not), on the server online.I rather hold it locally on my hard drives on a safe place which cannot be reached online...
But the decision is really up to you.
