embedded computers - question

when computers are embedded into other devices, this is to provide them with "intelligence" - but what does this "intelligence" mean?
and what is the capability of an embedded computer?

Well I am going to assume you mean devices as in a cell phone, game console or your car. I dont believe that this is to provide the device with inteligence, but to create a nice interface for the machine-->human. This intelligence is created by the human therefore the capability is designed, implimented and destroyed by the human. If your trying to make the connection that a device which uses a computer/microchip has its own intelligence... it will be a hard link.

- it's more like trying to understand the capabilities of such an embedded computer in another device in - say - a car or a cell phone?

But the still the capabilities of a device are limited to the what the developer wanted the microchip to do. Yes I would call it intelligence if the machine could create its own, code and change the way it is supposed to work.
