Encryption Problems

Hi all

A few years ago I created some files on my Windows 98 PC and locked them using McAfee Fortress, creating a series of .SAF files out of them. I still know the password for these files and really need them. I got rid of my Win98 machine and now use WinXP. McAfee Fortress will not work under this operating system, so I can’t access these files.

I recently got hold of an old Win98 PC and installed Fortress on it but it still will not open the .SAF files, even though I KNOW I’m using the right password.

Given the issue does anyone have any words of wisdom they’d like to share with me as to how I might get these files back? As I said, they are my files and I do know the password – I’m tearing my hair out here. I can’t believe there’s no way to do this…

Just hope someone out there can help...

It's not McAfee, but check this link out and try it out.

It's used to decrypt .saf files. I'm not sure if it will work considering you used McAfee to encrypt them, but technically they are still .saf files and it should still work. Give it a try and let me know. If it doesn't work, google something like "Decrypt .saf" or something like that

Hi Platinum

Thanks for the suggestion - I downloaded the SafeReader, but unfortunately it doesn't work. There are no promises in the documentation about McAfee Fortress, but it seems to use pretty new encryption technology (168 bit Triple DES algporithm or blowfish) and I'm fairly sure that Fortress wasn't that heavy duty - the software is probably getting on for about 10 years old now.

Unless anyone else has any bright ideas I'll probably just have to resign myself to the fact that I've lost the files.

Thanks again for your thoughts.
