SYMPTOMS
loadTOCNode(1, 'symptoms');When you attempt to install Windows XP, the installation process may not complete successfully. Setup may stop at the beginning of the process or immediately after the first required restart, and then you receive an error message similar to the following: An unexpected error has occurred. (536821760) occurred at line 1768 in D:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c

CAUSE
loadTOCNode(1, 'cause');This behavior can occur because of damaged random access memory (RAM) modules or a damaged RAM slot.Back to the top
RESOLUTION
loadTOCNode(1, 'resolution');To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, as necessary: •Remove one or more of the RAM modules in your computer, leaving at least the minimum amount of RAM required for Windows XP installation. If this resolves the issue, either replace these modules with new RAM modules or reinsert them after Setup is completed.
NOTE: Verify that your computer's performance is not affected when you reinsert the old RAM modules.
-or-•Install the RAM modules into different (unused) RAM slots in your computer.
-or-•If you still experience problems before or after Setup, replace all of your computer's RAM modules with new RAM modules.Back to the top

while we are on the subject, i think your right abour the RAM, i have some spare sticks but none seem to retify the prorblem. when i go int the bios, it gived me 4 chioices for the ide, there are vtwo ide slots, so what is the relationship to the others. are the two slots on the board ide 0 & 1 or others.

The Microsoft article there indicates the installed memory has faults causing the error message you are seeing. The best way to see if that does have faults is to use a memory stress tester like Memtest. You let that run for several hours on each module separately. There are two main sites for downloading the free utility. http://www.memtest86.com/ http://www.memtest.org/
If your board's manual is onhand that will explain the various settings in the bios for the boot device order as well as others like either PCI/AGP or PCI/PCI-E for PCI-Express. The ide #0 should be the primary drive or boot drive with the ide #1 being the second if more then one drive has been installled On most systems the hard drive or host drive is connected to the end of the primary cable. Being mastered there is serves as the drive that loads the operating system.
With more then drive with OSs on them you select the number correct for the drive with the OS you want to load by default. The numbers #2 and #3 would usually see a cd or dvd drive as the device connected either slaved to a single hard drive on the primary cable or mastered on the secondary. Most boards will see cd rom listed as the way to boot from an optical drive. The other ide numbers are usually ide since a third or fourth hard drive is rarely used on newer systems due to the larger capacity drives available. This is a leftover from the early desktops with small capacity drives or floppy drives only at that time. There are some that do use several drives for running several operating systems at one time. Linux anyone?
