Computer shut down twice. About a week ago wife said message 'computer overheating'. Now a new message from her this morning while starting. Change of hardware, computer unable to start. rebooted again and is working right now. Need some ideas......thanks.
For the record its a old build. Intel Quad core. just a basic system and know its coming to an end.

If it's overheating then check the CPU fan and make sure it spins freely and isn't clogged up with dust.

Forgot to mention i did check the tower and blew out. Wasn't bad. I also bought some Artic Silver 5 a few days ago for this.
All the fans are working fine. seen no issues. I will try re-applying thermal paste this weekend. Have a part time job today.
I'll be back and let ya know.

Been working well for several hours now. No issues yet.
thanks
Applied the thermal paste this morning. Guessing it was ok to fire up computer
after applying maybe 2hrs later.

Shut down again. Same error 'cpu overheating'. I had taken off the heat sink cleaned the surface
completely and had applied the artic silver using smaller than a pea size and secured the heat sink and fan.
This was the intel fan and heat sink assembly it was. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000005852.html

And yes the fan is working fine. Does the fan run at different speeds or just one.
just know its working when looking at it.
