Errors in Windows XP, screenshots provided

Hi Carlm90,

First, download and install Piriform CCleaner to analyze and fix issues w/ your registry. Reboot and see if the errors persist. Sometimes I run through the registry cleaner a few times until it finds no more errors.

Have you scanned for malware? Run Malwarebyte's Antimalware in safe mode, remove anything it finds.

You can disable unneeded processes from starting up by doing the following:
Go to Start-->Run-->type in 'msconfig' and hit <enter>

In the Startup tab, uncheck everything that you do not need running in the background at
startup and click "Apply." Then, in the Services tab, check Hide All Microsoft
Services
, uncheck everything that you do not need running in the background at startup and click "Apply." Restart the computer.

Be forewarned that you may need certain programs to run at startup, especially display
drivers, etc.
If you do not feel comfortable removing startup entries on your own,
please do the following:

Download and run the executable for TrendMicro HijackThis!.
Press the button labeled "Open the Misc Tools Section". Then check both the check boxes next to the "Generate StartupList Log" button and click the button. Click the button to generate the list, save it and upload it as an attachment to your next post, and I or some other forum member will advise you on what to disable.

If Malwarebyte's does find some nasties, after you've removed them, run TrendMicro HijackThis! in safe mode and
post your scan log here and we'll see if there's anything else that needs to be looked at.

You could also defragment your hard drive(s) and see if that helps your performance.

Then post back with the results.

Good Luck! :D

You have leftover remnants from an infection. Please run malwarebytes and hijackthis and post the logs as deanj20 as already advised. You may have leftover infections.

Ok, just again pointing out this isn't my computer so I'm sure they need the thing reformatted as it hasn't been done for over 7 years. Not looking good on the infections front as they didn't know what security software was. I'll run the software your recommending. I did CCleaner already but I'll try HijackThis.

Odd - and you're still getting the registry errors? Are you sure that you ran the Registry Analyzer/Cleaner until it found no more issues? I suppose that it could be processes making a call to the missing DLLs...

As far as a complete reformat/reinstall, that's always my favorite way of doing things. If you have a legal Windows CD and you're able to backup everything they need off the current setup, then I say go for it!

When I used to work as a tech at UTPB, we had a "forty-five minute or reinstall" rule - if you pissed w/ the computer for more than 45 minutes and still hadn't resolved the issue, then you would back-up the user's data and reinstall the OS. :D
