Ethernet Cable and Weak Wireless Connection

My laptop has an ubelievably poor signal from the router even though it says the strength is "excellent". However it connects about every 2 minutes and this is not only annoying when having to re-open every 3rd webpage I visit but also dirsupts streams and messenger services.

I know there are better connections as I was at a friend's house a few days ago and we had no disruptions on our end, for the 5 hours we were using MSN Messenger on we were only signed out once.

Is this a problem with my ISP, router or laptop? Is there anything I can do to fix this such as uninstalled software?

Also another problem I've experienced is when using a wired connection. I recently bought an Ethernet cable and haven't been able to use the internet with it despite establishing a Local Area Connection. The cable is connected to the router and laptop. The modem and router were also restarted.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Should I be running both wired and wireless connection at the same time?

Windows: XP
Router: Belkin
ISP: Virgin Media
Laptop: Packard Bell

Thanks very much this has been a troubling issue,

Sami

So the internet issue is only causing problems when you are using the wireless, right? From reading this it appears that using a wired connection doesn't let you do anything. What type of wireless network are you running, 802.11g? My first guess would be you have some sort of interference at your house, such as wireless phones and microwaves, if possible move your laptop and wireless router away from those devices, and try switching the wireless channel on your router to see if that fixes it. Second, is this a DSL or cable connection? If it's DSL make sure you have DSL filters installed on all the phones, otherwise when someone uses the phone it may disrupt your internet connection.

Since you were somwhere else and your pc was working normally there then your problem as to be with the setup at your place. You said you rebooted both modem and router, which is what I was gonna suggest first. The next thing to try would be to get a different router and see if the connection still drops. If so, then its either a modem or isp issue.

Sorry I didn't make it clear, it wasn't my computer we used at my friend's house. I just included that part to compare the connections.

Once again sorry I'm quite new to this.

The wireless gives me disconnection problems. Using the wired I can't get on the internet at all because I'm not sure I've connected it properly.

My brother is currently sitting next to me with his laptop and he says he doesn't experience these problems.

Have you tried a different router? In my experience Belkin routers are not very good at all... Linksys, US Robotics, Netgear or D-Link would all be good options.

I've always been suspicious of Belkin but I don't want to waste money on a new router if it isn't the answer. Like I mentioned, my brother's laptop (right next to mine) has no disturbances.

It's possible that you may have malware on your system if everything was working correctly on your machine and then just started having problems. You may want to perform this procedure providing you have a usb flash drive that you can download programs onto from a different computer and then install them on yours and run them.

It also may be to your advantage that you uninstall both your wireless and lan drivers and reinstall with the latest available driver.
