There was lighting followed by blackout in my area few days ago, it damaged my ethernet card. Is it easy to replace it. my warrente ran out few weeks ago. I am using sony vaio.
thanks

is it an external card or is it integrated into the motherboard. Former easy to replace, later is nigh on impossible

I really doubt that it's an external card. But, I think I know what you mean, an expansion card.

If it's integrated, just get an expansion card, if it is already an expansion card, just replace it with a new one.

You got the right idea, just like apj101 said. Though, you will most liley have to get a new ethernet card, whether its intergrated or pci, cause if its dead, it wont work anyway, and you can't replace the intergrated one. You coul just try reinstalling the driver though.

worth a try, but wouldn't get my hopes up.

the cheapest solution, and the best would be just to pick up another expansion card, unless the port is knackard. Then an external card is required

Thanks everyone
I checked it out. it appears to be part of motherboard. now how could I get an external to work? how could I connect it. I don't have PCI slots left free. I do have lots of USBs. Is there any differences b/w USB (which I am currently using for last couple of days) and etherent card. USB seems to be working ok.

how are you currently using usb, do you have a usb router.

You can get external network cards that plug into your usb, or get another expansion card that plugs into your pcmcia port
I don't have PCI slots left free
do you mean PCMCIA slots

I am not sure what pcmcia is but I had one free slot on the back of my computer which I used to add TV Turner in (used PCI where I placed the card- that what it says in the instruction).
At the moment I am connecting to internet using USB through modem from COX.net. I used to attach ethernet cable to modem now I have to use USB cable because Ethernet nolonger works. It appears that best thing to do is to get external Ethernet and connect it to USB But what Ethernet is good for when you can do same job by using USB? just little confuse!

The ethernet is gone. I recently pulled apart a system (HP) that was struck by lightning (no surge protector) and it fried the ethernet port and that part of the board. He started experiencing problems (BSoD's and whatnot) that were due to the fried port. Best (and probably safest) thing to do would be to get a new mobo or try and send that back as RMA ( if you can).
