Ethernet outlet wiring questions

I'm working on putting in an outlet that will have three ethernet plugs. One will run to my brothers room to act as a crossover cable. The other two will be running to a router (one for my pc, the other will be for my computer).

My main questions will be how to wire the ends.

the two going from the outlet to the router will be the same, but how should i wire the ends?

I'm confused as to when to use what ends. when should i use t568A or t568B. Do the ends always have to be the same or always different.

and for the crossover between mine and my brothers room, what ends should they be (since there will be a cord going from his outlet to his pc and one from my outlet to my pc) and do those two cords have to be crossover too.

right now, I have one port for my outlet done, both ends wired as the t568A.

As you can probably tell, I'm really confused and could use all the help anyone can offer.

well if this helps then cool. you can run all 3 cables the same way. for the cross over one going to your brothers room, just run the ethernet cable in standard layout the same as the other 2, and have the cable that connects the computer to the wall outlet be the crossover cable. you will only need to have one crossover cable connected between your pc and your brothers pc, so dont put one between your pc and the outlet and one between your brothers pc and the outlet. just one between your pc to the outlet will work properly.

Today's standard of wiring is using the 568b setup. Info on this site.

LIke said by kdfresh, just wire the jacks the same and only make a crossover cable between wall jack and pc for your brother. Just a note, that your computer would have to remain on for your brother to get internet. But actually the easiest thing to do would be to either

1. Run a wire from the router to your brothers room.
2. If you can't do option 1 then get a 4 port switch and put it in your room. The port that is assigned to the router, you can hook up the switch too and then run a cable to your pc and then run a cable to the jack that goes to your brothers room. No crossover cabled needed and your computer doesn't need to be on for him to go online.

4 port switch.

I think that's a silly suggestion.

If you want to run a cable from your room to your brothers, I would run a cross over cable behind the walls from you to your brothers room that way you can use any standard cat5 cable. Chances are one day you will forget that his computer is running a cross-over to the wlal, or he will take the cable somewhere to use elsewhere, and you will run into problems. It will take you hours only to realize that this is the wrong cable.

Keep it simple, use standard cables for your computers, use the cross-over to connect room to room.

Just my $.02

Sorry for taking so long to get back. So as I understand it my all my cables will end with 568b except for the crossover which will be a b end and an a end

If this is right this has made my life easier

Thanks

That is correct.

Why do you need 2 cables running to your computer from the router?

Depending on where your router is.... say its in the same room then i would just have 1 ethernet jack in your room (that goes to your bro's room) and it should just be straight through and plug it into a switch or if your router has a built in switch.

if the router is in a different room then i could see 2 jacks...1 for your computer and 1 for your brothers... plugging into the switch that plugs into your router. and then however your router plugs into your modem.

Am I right or are you trying to do soemthing different?

Nope. My bad I won't have two cables going to my pc. One to my pc one to my xbox 360. Sorry about that

A couple of notes:
-So long as the wires are in the same order on both ends, it technically doesn't matter what that order is. It's good to adhere to standards, but data doesn't know what color wire it's traveling through.

-Making one a crossover is very likely unnecessary. Crossover cables are mostly obsolete, as any newer networking equipment should have "Auto-MDIX" ports which are capable of detecting whether crossover or straight through is needed and changing the way the signal is received accordingly.
