Hi all, new to forum, in dire need of some good advice....

So , I have myself a quite dated laptop atm . . . An inspiron 6000.....

I know I could increase ram and upgrade cpu to an INTEL PENTIUM M 770...
my question is that since it that cpu runs at 2.13 GHZ that sounds pretty good..
and i could get the cpu for literally 20 bucks...
would it be cheaper to swap that and add more ram then to just buy a new computer?
new 2017 computerrs in my price range 200-350 are having processors that have less GHZ or equal.. so would i really need to dish out the money for a neww comp or is the upgrade worth it to save money ? Are there things im not aware of that make a difference ? I desperately need a new comp and the only reason my comp is running well is because i swapped xp for Lubuntu. plz lmk what i should do. i want a fast , good computer for music production, perhaps a little gaming too but nothing crazy, older titles ... Let me know please im stumped !

You wouldn't want to upgrade such an old system, not worth it. You have no idea how cpu's speed works. The pentium 770 is a single core processor, which is useless. Get a new system with a quad core.

Yeah, to be blunt.. that laptop is a complete dog and should likely be shot out behind the barn.

Any upgrade you would attempt on it would be a futile and an utter waste of resources.

in additon, a 200-350 new laptop isn't exactly reaching for the stars....I get it, you gotta work withina budget but perhaps saving a few more bucks would yield you better options.

Lol, well I asked and I recieved. Like I said I assumed there was omethng i was missing about the whole cpu thing and was not knowledgeable on. Thanks for the replies. And yeah I am a poor student though so it is hard to accumulate the funds but on a second thought it would indeed make sense to just invest in a very quality pricier laptop and just have it last me, and remain relevant for a long time. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best laptop one could acquire with say 450-600? And from then would like to load elementary OS personally..

Preferably laptops with good upgrade paths avalable for it to help it stay relevant in the future without having to get a whole new pc .. any help appreciated :)

Laptops don't have much upgrade paths except for maybe adding more ram and swapping harddrives and even that depends on the particular laptop. Some ultrabooks aren't serviceable at all.

Sadly, most laptops are not really user serviceable or upgradable, except for ram, hard disc/solid state disc, and like a wifi card/msata type device. Even laptops that are into the thousands of dollars are often not really changeble, kinda the reality with laptops.

If you need a new machine, I'd look for something on sale in the budget your working under, and stretch it for the duration of your studies. Once you have a steady cash flow then you can build a custom PC based around your needs and have full custom and flexibility to tailor how you like.

That would be my 2 cents.. been there.. done that.
