Excel not opening an attached in Outlook email

Here is a good one. I have an external hard drive hooked up via USB that I use as a backup.

Recently I can not open an attachment in excel that is attached in an email. If it does, it is a web page. If I save to the external hard drive and try to open it through Win Explorer I can’t.

However if I launch Excel, then do the open command and try that newly saved file it on external hard drive, it opens.

Anyone? What’s up?
 
More info required. What is the file extension of attachment? What version of Excel are you running. What OS and SP? Have you checked for file association problems?
 
It appears to be a file association issue. For every file you have on your system there has to be an executable file associated with it to open the file. In your case Excel should be associated with this attachement but it appears not to be.
Open your email and save the attachment to your hard drive. right click this file and click on Open With. You should see some program suggestions come up. Go down the list and click on Choose Program. In the next box click on Microsoft Excel. look near the bottom and tick the box beside "Always use this program to open this type of file". Click OK at the bottom. Double click the file to see if it will open in Excel.
