excessive battery drainage??

I have been having some random problems with my motherboard battery. It seems that, while few ever need to replace this troublesome part, I have to keep replacing it. This is the third time within the past year. Every once in awhile I will get a CMOS checksum error on boot and booting will freeze at this point. It is only resolved with a new battery.

Has anyone ever heard about something so ridiculous??

I haven't heard of such a problem, I have yet to change the battery on one of my five year old computers. Those button type batteries shouldn't leak. They should last at least 3 years. And as long as your computer is plugged in, it will use the mains power not the battery's.

I know, funny how that works. I have been building computers for years and I have never, ever had to replace a battery. An outside opinion says that there might be a bulging capacitor on my board, sucking the battery dry. I am going to be looking into that matter. Until then, still pretty confused.

That's strange... I was going to ask if you cut the power to your computer(as with a surge protector or something) but then I remembered my grandparents. In fear of being hacked they cut off their surge protector, and i have yet to replace a battery on their old Cele 700MHz...

Perhaps it's a glitch with the motherboard? Have you tried updating the bios or anything like that?

Are the batteries you're getting NiCad or LithIon? NiCads will cause the problems you are seeing quickly as they lose memory if they are part-discharged then re-charged.

The battery is LiIon. Very peculiar problem. I am assuming that the motherboard is draining the battery for some reason - even though I never even shut the computer off.
