Exert Dominating Control Over My Ports

So I know there are a bazillion different port assignments... I believe I read about them at the IANA website...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you can exert TOTAL DOMINATION CONTROL (!!!!!!!) over your PC's security if you control the ports, i.e. shut off access to ports you don't want to be used by programs.

I don't know THAT much about port assignments, but I do want to exert dominating control over my port assignments so I can keep my PC running its best, fastest and safest.

What's the best way to learn about ports, and how can I close off access to ports that should not be used?

Thanks guise :)

I imagine you mean interent ports? Or Serial ports. For internet ports most firewalls should have this option, or check your router. For serial ports such as USB no ideas.

Yes, sorry I didn't specify I meant Internet ports.

I've tried to teach myself NETSTAT -- it's pretty baffling and I think I'd do better with greater knowledge of ports.

No need to be sorry, the ports to have open depend on what software you have running, such as an email program or a game. The interent (http) uses port 80, and pop3 (the email service) uses port 103 if I am not mistaken. So it depends on what you have and what you need. As for the port manager I have no idea, hopefully a more knowledgeable member will come along and help you out!

Hope this helps :D
