.exe's not running

my one year old daughter repeatedly turned on and off my PC and played with the key board.

Currently, i cannot run the programs in my computer when i try to click the desktop icons. clicking the exe from the program folder also doesnt work. Most exe icons were replaced with the generic icon that you will see if your computer does not recognize the program.

You however can run the programs by opening saved files.

I tried to reinstall my os windows xp pro but when i click the install button, nothing happens. Even Norton Go back doesn't work. is there a way i can solve this problem without resolving to PC format?

In China, have an "logo1_.exe" and "huigezi" virus it's connection ".exe" document.

---------Sorry, My english is very bad. I'm chinese :D :)

no exe = no scan for viruses = reformat hehehe

Thanks for the info. checked info about the viruses. since all my exe's don't run, there is no way i can scan my pc for any kind of viruses. I think i will just have to reformat my computer. :( .

thanks again

If you can get a browser window open on the machine go here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ it's an online virus scan.

You've got a registry problem. Find a way to run regedit, if you can't let me know and assuming you trust me not to screw up your computer anymore I'll give you a simple program to shell it (this worked for me when I was repairing this problem on a friends system). Go to this entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command

There should only be one key in there it is a REG_SZ. Set it to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command might have to be set as well.

There are a few places for free online scans of your system provided by retail software vendors with security products available. A few places to try besides downloading a free trojan scanner are found at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

The Ewido trojan scanner can be downloaded free at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ In addition to Ewido there are several free tools you can download like Microsoft's new Windows Defender no longer a beta but full version found at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

A few others like AVG 7.5 antivirus and AVG Anti-Spyware Free found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free are good to have onhand even if you do decide to reformat the drive. But you can still try to clean the system up with the use of these here or others.

change cmd.exe to cmd.com,and run the command "assoc .exe=exefile"
try it.

there is another way, open my computer-tools-files option-files type-create a new type .exe ,and associate to the application.

just finished

just checked the forums again. Its 230AM, just finished formatting and reinstalling my pc. thanks for the help
