My rents have the router in the basement -.- I have my laptop two stories up! I get about 18% connection (6-13mbps) any way of increasing this? I can't plug it in, rents won't let me run the wires

Lol, interesting use of the word rents.

Yes you can, you can do all or some of the following:

1. replace router antenae with high output ones (you can get them from ebay).
2. create parabolic dishes to go over the antanea and make them directional (google has various projects using cardboard and aluminium foil)
3. Enter the router bios and ensure that the type of transmission (e.g. A, B, G or N) is optimised - that is, if all devices are N, set it to N, if you have a mix, only select the type relevant.
4. In the router bios, ensure maximum transmission power is selected
5. Repeat the first 4 above on your recieving device.
6. Ensure you have the latest drivers and bios on all devices.
7. Consider network over power devices.

To add to that:

1.) Make sure the router is high up in the basement (i.e. on top of a bookcase, not on the floor)
2.) Move other furniture away from the router, you don't want it placed next to taller objects like filing cabinets, etc.
3.) If your router supports it, install a custom OS like DD-WRT or Tomato, they allow you to boost the transmission power.

Dang, above my head already. I have never dealt with a router and quite frankly don't understand it. I know more about a computer and what's going on there ;P...So We have a router on top of a metal cabinet with another device that is leading off 4 Cat5's....One sends wifi one sends cat5?....I have hear that the tin foil thing can easily burn out a router ESPECIALLY with the extra strength....so how do I enter the bios to check what all the settings are and make it optimal for me? Otherwise, can I run 50ft of cat5 through my heating and cooling ducts? :P....consider getting an Xbox in my room too and it's just going to drain all my wifi

What's hooked up

2 running PC's
one PC that never turns on
TV
Vudu
PS3
3 iPod touches (ones on all the time others are on/off)
2 tablets (ones on all the time other is on/off)
my laptop
a Roku box
and I believe one more TV over wireless

It's a freaking hefty thing going on here ;P...any suggestions or should I just deal with it through the summers and enjoy faster connections at school

Just a few points to clarify here.

If you have 4 ethernet cables going to your router, one is for the WAN (internet line from the modem), the rest are for hard wired devices.

The tinfoil mod wouldn't burn out your router as that only modifies the radiation pattern of the antenna, however installing custom software and boosting the transmit power could burn out your router.

You don't want to run plastic lines along with hot water pipes.
