So, damn near 5 years ago I build my first rig. It went great. Lasted me through 4 moves, 5 years and a shit load of abuse. But I kept it up. The cost me between 2 to 2.5k back then including everything...black mamba mouse. 1 asus 1080p 26in monitor and the rest below
1 x Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor BX806019201 x ZALMAN ZM-CS4A Socket 1366 Clip Support Kit for CNPS9500/9700

This was a semi extreme gaming pc, budgeted affordably...i was a freshman in college. I want to do the same thing again...but now my budget is way more flexible. i dont want to go any higher than 4k(and the 4k machine better be with good reason )but would rather stay in the 2.5k to 3.5k range thats with the mouse/keyboard/monitors included. The main thing is, I wanna improve my last mistakes:
improper cooling
case wasnt spacious enough for all the stuff
i7 920 ran too hot and so did the two gpu's
no watercooling
shitty case with shitty cooling

my goals:
stay at a constant 60 - 65 celcius (wondering if cooler is possible)
run crysis, day z, eve online, skyrim w/ ultrahd mod at 60fps on two monitors
stay away from led's well maybe a few
buy an actual bad ass case

So far i have decided on:
i7 4670 - unless someone can argue me down to the i5
r9 290/comparable nvidia card? - i really wanna try nvidia but i still need to find a comparable gpu. instead of crossfire/sl as of right now i am leaning toward the single gpu line. Is this card able to handle a two monitor setup with hd mods for games like skyrim and new vegas? Is a dual gpu set up more ideal for two monitors or are dual set ups pointless since really, no games demand enough performance to utilize both?
Storage - Im going to be running my os on an ssd this time and having separate storage...most importantly im thinking about having a raid 1 setup for storage...should I invest in a raid card or does onboard raid ability generaly work fine? if i do a raid 1 setup it should still be possible for to partion both drives for a dual OS setup right (Windows and linux)?
liquidcooler- havent really search for anything yet
case - -nothing yet
Ram - probably something ocz

any help would be appreciated

Have you consider just upgrade GPU to R9 290 and a nice case to see if that meet your requirement on gaming?

If you are not happy, get the new CPU/ Mobo/ RAM/ SSD later.

For RAID 1 onboard should be fine. If you were getting more complex I would push for a dedicated hardware RAID card.

Either Linux or Windows will see RAID 1 the same way, as one drive. AFAIK the data is only split when it passes through the RAID card. Partitioning the drive and dual booting OSes will feel the same as if you have one drive once you get to the OS install menus.

Unless you need hyperthreading in the i7, save the money and get the i5. Put the extra $100 towards a better cooler.

Case- Personal favorites are Lian Li and Corsair but that will be different for each user. Tess us what you really value in a case (or hate in a bad one) and we'll help you narrow it down.

Cooling- With a budget like yours I would go with a custom loop. Best performance, but it will cost you quite a bit. If you don't want to dive into a custom loop you can either go High end air cooling (something like this)or AIO liquid. I would probably do H110 for the CPU or something equivalent. You can either get a good GPU with a better cooler like the Twin Frozr 4, Asus CU2, EVGA has one as well. or go a bit outside the box and grab one with a stick PCB and add on an NZXT G10 and add another AIO liquid setup. Current generation GPUs really benefit from being kept cold. Their boost features in the latest generation will give you better performance just by having lower temps.

RAM- 1600/1866 will work just fine. Move up in performance if you feel the need. I probably wouldn't move into 2000+ unless I saw a good deal or used programs that really benefited from the extra speed.
