Exploring your hard drive?

Hey all, again ;)

Before I destroy my hard drive I would like to explore it..

This hard drive is 6 years old. Most of what I want to look at is about 2 years old..

How do I do this? Also, can I recover anything I've found? (IE: a photo I lost but is still on the hard drive)

What about conversations on Messengers?

So I guess the Q is, how do I go about exploring my hard drive?

I am not computer savvy in the least. Help again? Thanks!!

you mean looking at all the file you got? click Start>My Computer, double-click your hd, and you can look through it, getting a new hd?

i hope i understand what you mean... you want to look at stuff from 2 years ago?

Start then open "Search"
A window will pop up and on the left should be some options click whatever you want to search for... The Click Advanced Options and deleted "Date MOdifyed" and then set the date to whatever date files you want it to find

If you've deleted files from your harddrive you won't be able to look at them again.

As Encore said you can search for the files if you know what they are titled. Or you can just manually look around like jp198780 said. Most of your files will be in the "My Documents" section or under your primary drive letter (default C:\) if you have Windows XP.

The platters would look nice on your wall! lol. b esure to shine em!

haha, i don't think he wants to look in that sense. but if you do have a broken HDD opening it up is a pretty interesting experience. that was one of my first lessons about computers, my dad had a HDD without a cover on it and i wanted to know what the disks inside were...

If it's in a dust free environemnt it should work fine. A few people took the covers off, and retro-fitted acrylic covers with LED's on them, and they still worked afterwards. Same with CD drives. That way you can see the disks/platters working. Pretty cool, but risky none the less.
