External and OS

Hi!

I'm in a sticky situation:

I've got a Maxtor 500GB external hard drive and I use it between my desktop with XP and my notebook with Vista. But the problem is when I connect the Maxtor from my notebook to desktop or vice versa, it becomes unreadable and the computer that it is afterwards connected, signifies the data is corrupted etc. until I do full CHKDSK shit (takes hours). I've already lost some data cause of this weird stuff and I need to know how to fix this or get the explanation why is this happening to my Maxtor.

PS. I've changed it to a new one a while ago so it ain't broken, just some conflict between desktop xp and notebook vista...

Is this a MyBook or just a drive in a case you bought? On a related note everything I stick my XP formated flash drive in a Vista computer it wasn't to scan it for consistancy.

It's a normal external USB hard drive, Maxtor Basics 500GB. And when I change the USB slot, it may appear as a raw data and suggests a format . But after a chkdsk it works again... can't figure it out.

If it's becoming corrupted in both directions I would have to say it's the drive itself. Have you tried safetly ejecting the drive in task manager before unplugging.

Everything has been done to safely use the drive, ejecting included. In brief: I plug the drive to my Vista comp => it works flawlessly, no problems whatsoever. I plug the drive to my XP comp => BAM, comp says it's raw data, can't read and says it's corrupted data. I do my magic with chkdsk /r and my drive becomes all readable again. Now when I change to VIsta comp, again corrupted, "raw" data and chkdsk /r will fix it.

However some files have become totally corrupted so they can't be fixed even with chkdsk /r. It's like my drive works only with one OS, either XP or Vista. Any answer to that?

Appreciate the effort.
