External Backups

Hey Everybody. :)

I'm going to switch from tape backups to external hard drives and I'm wondering if anybody out there has some experience they can share.

I want a robust, reliable 500GB USB 2.0 with FireWire 800 external hard drive. I haven't been able to find any well reviewed products anywhere. Is anybody using one that they can recommend?

I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone doing external SATA backups, and how that's working out for them.

My Setup:
OS: CentOS 4.3
Kernel: 2.6.9-11.ELsmp kernel
Expansions: One open 64 bit, 66MHz PCI-X expansion slot.

The only external high-bandwidth ports I have are USB 2.0; I'd have to install a PCI card to use either FireWire or SATA.

Thanks,

I've not heard much about Firewire800 yet. I'd suggest just sticking with more commonly used ones for now. I also don't know the actual speeds of Firewire, but I'd suspect your best option would just be an external SATA device. USB 2.0 is fine, but it can cause more overhead on your system than say SATA, IDE, and such.

Also, just to save a few bucks... Unless you plan to move the drive around, there's no reason you couldn't load it inside the computer...
