i am buying a new computer and wanted to see if there is a solution wher ei can take the harddrive out of my old hp and use it in a external case and use fire wire or usb to access it?...any possibilities

Yes, very simple. Just go buy an external case. Make sure you buy a case that is compatable with your HDD. IDE, SATA, ect. Most are USB so you should be fine. Hope this helps.

You should look on eBay and get a cheap 3.5" enclosure. Try to get an all aluminum case for good heat dissipation. Overlook the ones with fans. The fans are so small, they're completely useless.

Let me rephrase then... from my experience, the fan was useless. The fan in my enclosure was too small to circulate any significant amount of air, and without a second exhaust, I couldn't see how any cooling was done. I took mine out to get rid of the mild hissing noise the fan used to make.

anyone know where you can get a dual bay or tri bay unit for a good price...there really isn't many on ebay that are worth looking at and the ones i've found on the net are 100 to 300 a unit...way to much for me

I've never actually measured how wide the HDDs were that I've used. But to my knowledge, they're all pretty much the same width. Otherwise, they wouldn't fit in the 3.5" bay that is standard for computer cases.
