external devices for laptop

Im using a 2008 macbook pro, model before the unibody. Besides upgrading to 4gb of ram I had a couple questions about increasing its performance.

First off, im not expecting significant changes, just some things to make this usable for a few more years.

Do external devices like a mouse, keyboard and monitor help your computer run faster? (I heard it was because it took less power running onboard devices).

Nope. Besides upgrading the RAM, make sure that you have at least 20% of your storage, free.

Getting a new hard drive perhaps SSD. Funny not only do I have the 13" Unibody Pro I actually am using that model too. I have the 17" 2008 one. It can actually take 8GB
