External DVD and my laptop

Hello,

I don't know much about computers, and here's my question:

I have an older Toshiba Portege Tablet PC with no CD/DVD drive. This has been a hassle and I recently decided to buy an external DVD drive. I didn't know that my computer might be too slow to work with the DVD drive, so I didn't think I'd have any problems. But, when I loaded the software that came with the DVD drive (Nero), my computer was running EXTREMELY slowly and when DVDs would play, there was no sound. Without the software, the drive will read CDs but it won't play DVDs.

Are there any free programs I can download so that this drive will play DVDs and not make the computer run extremely slowly? Or do I just need to take the DVD drive back?

Specs:
Drive: Liteon DVD Multi
Laptop:

Windows XP, Tablet PC Edition 2005, Service Pack 2
Mobile Intel Pentium III CPU - M 1333MHz
1.33 GHz, 752 MB of RAM

Thanks!

The specs on your pc are not great but not that bad. I am assuming that the problem is nero just being dumb. Nero is bloatware and is a big program. For playing dvd's all you need is windows media player or you can use vlc media player and you wont have any problems with codecs. The only thing you would need nero for is for burning an avi or similar video to a dvd as nero converts the file. You can use an alternate converter for burning dvd's. I recommend convertxtodvd 3. It converts and then burns the file and is way faster at converting than nero.
