External DVD burner

I have an external DVD burner, whenever I use it, it seems that it only lasts for a while. So when trying to burn a DVD, the drive dissapears from the computer and the burning process is cancelled.

It also disappears from My Computer, and the list of DVDs in the computer. It is like it goes to sleeping mode. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or have any other tips?

Why not just get an internal burner?

They actually work, and cost 1/5 the price.

Mine's an 18x and cost me $30.

Well, it's not like i don't see that option. I already have one, but it's too slow. This is my brothers, It doesn't fit in my computer. But it should work, why else are there external dvds to buy?

that's a good question

i would guess your problem is a faulty power supply, or an irq address conflict

externals aren't known for working especially well, tho, so i can't pinpoint the problem from here.
