External hard disk problem

My multi-media divx external hard drive doesnt work any more on the computer,it still works on the tv.I suspect there is malware somewhere.Should I reformat the disk?If so what is the procedure?Thanks.

What happens when you attach it to the computer? Do you get any error messages? Have you tried using a different usb(i assume anyway) port?

I get a message which states that windows doesnt recognise file "recycle" something or other,I have tried different ports and even a different computer.Thanks for helping.
