External Hard Drive-Can I do this?

Is it possible to transfer ITunes and all my photos from my Kodak Easyshare program to an external hard drive so I can free up space on my internal hard drive? I would like to use the external hard drive for these 2 programs and if possible remove these 2 programs completely from my internal hard drive.

I don't use these 2 programs all the time and it would be nice to have them somewhere where if I do need them I could simply plug something in and bring them up. Would a high capacity thumb drive work for this situation? Many Thanks!
 
I cannot speak for iTunes as I don't use it but there are two parts to every application. The program and the data. The program is usually quite small compared to data such as photos and music. You could transfer those to the external drive, keeping the programs where they are.

Depending on how the program works, you may want to change the default path to the new drive. Some programs automatically remember the last-used and will open up that folder next time. You would normally connect the drive before starting the application, otherwise you may get a "path/file not found" message. That's not a big deal but means you have to select the new drive/folder again.

You should also back up the music and photos to another drive or cd/dvd. External drives and thumb drives are slightly more problematic than internal drives.

If you are talking about a desktop PC, another possibility is to get a larger HDD for your computer or a second HDD.
 
Both of these programs should have options in their "Preferences" menus that should all you to choose what directory the program uses to store files. In iTunes it's as easy as Edit > Preferences > iTunes Media Folder Location.

After you change the folder location, you'll probably have to manually move all of the pictures/music from the old folder to the new one.
 
Just 2 weeks ago I backed up ITunes(Wifes account)to a cd. So could I just delete all her songs on ITunes and when she would need her songs just use the cd to reload the songs? I remember a couple of years ago I backed up her tunes account and shortly after that we got a nasty virus.

I wiped out the hard drive and to my surprise I actually re-installed Windows XP. I put the back up CD in and also to my surprise it loaded her ITunes and nothing was lost. So maybe the best thing to do is back up everything onto a CD and then delete it from my computer. Can I do it this way? As usual thanks for your input. John

If you decide to back up to CD then make two copies, make sure they are readable and keep them separate. Whether a CD or external HDD is more convenient for the day-to-day access depends on whether the HDD is normally up and running.
