I have been doing some research on google.com and also on download.com to find some software with which I can protect External Hard Drive (same software/process would be for any folder on internal hard drive) and saw there are many different programs for that. But the word ''protection'' can have several meanings and not just one. Unfortunately just a few programs have good and enough understandable description what kind of protection is it. I have seen some of them protect the owner from stolen External Hard Drive (EHD). What I mean with this is; IF anyone/anywhere steals the EHD then this EHD won't be able to be connected on ANY other computer (pc/laptop) because it can be only from the owner's computer. So even if it is stolen, the datas cannot be accessed. I think this is called ''Encryption'' or similar. I do NOT ( ! ) search something like this. There can be other kinds of protection too.
What I am looking for is; When it comes to huge amount of folders and if I rush a bit, it can happen that I, by huge accident which means terrible damage for me, move one folder (or subfolder - the depth of folder doesn't matter) or file to another folder. Besides this (protection from unwanted, by accident, moving folders from one to other location), I also need protection from deleting folders or files by accident and from renaming them by accident. Also from moving (copying) from somewhere else TO my EHD. But I do NOT need to protect copying/moving FROM EHD to somewhere else (lets say to internal hard drive).
So I am searching the software with which I could do all four kind of protections that I just named. To name them again:
- protection for moving (files/folders INSIDE location of whole EHD)
- for renaming
- for deleting
- for copying something ON EHD (from somwhere else)
I am not interested (and also don't trust it) in windows ''read only'' option and also don't want to use Edit\Undo. This (Undo) only fixes whatever has been done by accident but it doesn't protect from doing it (blocks possible accident).
Does anyone have any suggestion for software that I search? Protection can be done on various ways - lets say with writting a password (that of course must be correct) before any of four processes would be done.
I use Windows XP and all my external hard drives (if this information is even needed) are through USB connecting port.
