External Hard drive for gaming

I apologized if this has been asked. I checked through and did not see anything.

I have a laptop for work. Installing personal programs on it is frowned upon. It has a better graphics card than my personal laptop. Would it be possible to install and run games from an external hard drive onto the work laptop? Would the games run without any noticable issues? If so, any recommendations on type/brand or specs that are important?
 
You should be able to run games from an external hard drive, as lon as you can get it to show up as a drive in the computer. Its probably not the best idea though as running progams from an external bay will run a bit slower, cause they are not hooked up ide, anything internal would be faster.
