external hard drive maybe?

im new to this site. and the first thing i want to tell you is that i have an acer laptop. this laptop is almost pointless to me because i use it like a desktop. It never leaves my house. with that said my laptop does not have alot of space on it but i was wondering if i could buy an external hard drive and hook it up to this. would this clear more space on my laptop and make it run smoother? or what can i do to make it faster? this is what i really want to know. will an external hard drive do this?
 
an external hard drive will give you more disk space to store your stuff like music files...etc.

If you want to make your laptop faster then more ram would help

Whats the full specs of your laptop?
 
i dont know much about computer specs but this is the best i could do.i have an Acer Aspire 300LCi, Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3000+, 40GB HDD, 256 MB DDR. if u need to know anything else let me know.
 
Yeah it doesnt have much ram....

Maybe you should buy some more memory.....another 256mb should improve it but a 512mb stick would be even better.

but if you want more hard drive space too then purchasing an external hard drive would be good aswell.
 
see i dont really know what your talking about with the 512mb stick and all. is this just like a flash drive or something? or is it something that goes inside my computer?
 
the 512 memory im talking about goes inside your pc.....the more you have the better realy.

You can get them in diffrent sizes 128mb,256mb,512mb,1Gb,2Gb etc

Im pretty sure you could buy a 512Mb stick and add it alongside your current 256 mb stick to give you 768Mb of ram....that would be a good improvement from 256mb and make applications and your system much faster.

as for an external hard drive this just stores data so if your in need of more space then thats what you could buy.
 
ahh i see thanks...i think i might do this.. do you have any brands or anything that you recommend....also how do i know if it will fit in my laptop? or do they all fit in any laptop?
 
i would wait until the more experienced guys come long to help you with what type of ram you need.....just so you can be 100% sure what ram you need.:)
 
it can be done easily by anyone with minor computer knowledge, and if you aren't one of those, there are enough people to help explain it to you here if you still want to do it yourself...
 
ok thanks...i think i will try doing it myself because i asked a computer shop and he said if i buy the part he would charge 90$ to install and i heard it is fairly easy. now one last thing. what memory can i put in my laptop. my specs are in one of the above replys. i plan on buying the memory from best buy because i have some gift cards. so if anyone can find me or tell me what memory will fit in my laptop please help. im either going to go with a 512 or 1gb. any of these would be ok.
