external hard drive not reading?

i have my friends hard drive here and when I plug the USB in it doesnt even appear as anything has been plugged in. :S

it doesnt even come up to install software when powered on.

any help?

its a Toshiba if that helps any.
 
1. Have you tried a differnt USB?
2. By saying it doesn't do any when you power it on I assume it has an AC adapter that's plugged in. Does the drive itself have lights on it? What do they do if anything?

It's likely that if a new USB cable doesn't make any diffence and you have known good USB ports the drive may be dead or at least the case the drive is in is dead.
