Ok, so I had been movin some files over to my external hard drive mainly pics, videos, and ripped CDs.........but anyways I go to get a picture off of it and when I go to turn it on nothin happens. I try again still nothing, but a blue light blinks on then off.........If i hold the power button down the light jus goes on and off. What can I do to get the files back? Its nothing major, but I got a ton of pics on there that I would really hate to lose

Any help would be greatly appreciated........Thanks

The drive should be a basic harddrive. You didn't specify how large it is, but it's either a basic 3.5" or 2.5". If it's a 3.5", that can just be popped into your computer, if say the USB to IDE converter's dead. Otherwise, you'd need another converter from either 44 to 40 pin IDE or 44 pin to USB(if it's the smaller laptop style drive)

That's if the USB controller in the drive is bad... Do you hear the drive spin up? Have you tried it on other computers? Have you check computer management and found it under drive proporties?

I do not hear the drive spin. Nothin at all is working when I hit the power button except the blue light comes on the goes right back off. I have tried it on other computers - same thing.

And its Western Digital External USB Hard Drive 160GB

My guess is there's something wrong with the enclosure/USB controller. If you think you could easilly open it, I'd suggest doing so and just removing the drive and trying to hook it up in your computer. It should be exactly like any other IDE harddrive. If it's under warrenty or can't for some reason, I don't think there's much you could do. I mean you could see if you could exchange it, but I doubt they'd keep your old harddrive or copy the data...

If you would like, you probably could also purchase a new enclosure(good ones go for about $30-40) and stick the drive in there... But of course we should be sure the drive still works ;P

The power supply for the enclosure has failed. Usually these are external to the external enclosure and easy to replace.

I was thinking about that too, but I just wouldn't think it would come on at all... But yeah, I suppose that too could be a problem
