how exactly does an external hardrive work? is it like a drag and drop type deal, or is it just like having a bigger hard drive

Ever used a USB flash drive? It's no different from one of those. You have another drive and you can drag and drop stuff to it.

external hard drives are like over-sized flash drives..
they're extremely useful as well..

the speed is capped by the speed of your connection type (usb, firewire, esata) so it all depends on how its plugged into your computer.
