external hard drive

i have an uncle who is a real movie buff for all the old movies from the 30's and 40's. his dish network only allows so many movies to store. he now has about 100 of them, and his memory is full. he was thinking of an external hard drive to copy more movies. he wants to know if he does get a drive will he be able to catalog the movies on the drive. also is there an adapter that goes from usb to a regular connection, so he can plug it into his DISH network. believe me any help will be appreciated, and get him off my back, as i don't know much about this stuff. thank you in advance......

to be honest i don't know of a way to do this, I'm sure dish made their box so people wouldn't be able to do this for copyright issues.

Some tv's have a usb input that is hard drive ready to read movies off of - make sure it is designed for an hdd, some have usb inputs that for some reason won't work with them.

also, you could lookup "HTPC" (home theater personal computer). I have one and I have all of my tv shows and movies on it and the interface (mediaportal with the streamedmp plugin) is 1000x better than dvr's.
