i am looking to purchase an external hard drive that auto-updates only new info when i plug it into my computer...i think it's called plug & play? i was wondering if this is a common feature or if i have to specifically look for this when shopping? also, are all brand names about the same, or should i stay away from generic ones? thanks!

Plug and play is the wrong wording. Basically you need backup software that will do incremental backups for when you add or change data. Plug and play just means you plug it in and its ready to go, no drivers needed.

Yes, plug and play is not what you want if you want to do backups every time you add data. Don't just get any brand, or generic, as they usually contain cheap unrealibale drives. Get a Seagate or Western Digital backup drive.
