External hard drive

I have a couple questions, and it's 3:36 AM in the morning where I am so please understand if I'm not explaining this well because I have yet to sleep. Anyway, I would like to get an external hard drive, there's just a couple questions I would like to ask first and see if anyone here has the answer(s) as this would be the first external hard drive I've ever purchased. I was looking at this one because I've heard some people say that Western Digital is reliable, plus it has a lot of room on it, and it's not too expensive (at least I don't think so, but again...not familiar with these so I'm not familiar with prices). To be honest, I won't be using this to back-up many important files, it'll mostly be used for videos, pictures, songs, etc., though there will be some important things on there that I'd like to know people won't be able to get to...is there any way to maybe set up a password to get into it or any other kind of security feature so I don't have to worry about others looking through my files? If not, could anyone recommend some comparable external hard drives where these features may be available? And my second question, though technically third at this point, is....will it work with a laptop? I don't intend on bringing the external hard drive around with me, that would defeat the purpose of a laptop, I'm going to use it when I need it and that's pretty much it. I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I'm not sure whether the system specifications are important in this case or not, so I won't list them, but if you need/request any I'll gladly post the ones that are requested.

Sorry for the length of this, I'd rather try to cover everything in one post so everyone understands and/or can help me the best they can. If you have any questions, I'll answer them ASAP. Again, I hope I made sense....I don't always think so well when I am this tired.

First off Welcome to the forum. Second I am not sure about security issues with external hard drives but i will find out for you. Third yes you can use it on a laptop like you asked.

If you want to 'lock' the drive you can use something like this http://www.truecrypt.org/

NTFS has it's own encrytion system but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work if you want to access the drive on a bunch of computers.
