External hard drives/ Mac and Windows?

Hello! I have a friend that's studying production in college and he has to have a short film done for tomorrow. He's looking for an external hard drive. He received one from another friend of mind who's a PC user, and he can't put anything in the Hard Drive (because he's working on a Mac). I also noticed that I have an external hard drive, but ever since I changed to Mac (Music Production) I can take things out of the hard drive , but I can't put anything the same problem my friends is having, is that because it's formatted for windows or something?? Could some one please shed some light upon this situation?

Most external drives come formatted to FAT32 which should be readable and writable by PCs and Macs. If it's formatted to NTFS, then Macs can read it, but not write it (at least not by default/without additional software).

Just make sure the drive you're using is formatted to FAT and it shouldn't have any problems.
