[SOLVED] External Harddisk crashing/restarting!

Hey, I have a problem with my external harddisk which crashes every now and then, it variates about 2-5 times a day, where it just shuts down and starts up again so all running processes on the external harddisk crash as well, which is especially annoying for games.

I tried to do an error-check but it didnt seem to fix the issue.
It's an Iomega 1 TB

Help is appreciated, it's been an issue for quite long now

My first thought is the drive may be overheating, or the Southbridge on the computer itself due to excessive data movement... The drive is externally powered, right?

Pull the drive out of the enclosure and stick it in your tower. See if it still dies when directly in your system.

can u explain what u mean by pulling it from enclosure and into the tower? i'm not sure i know what it is :S

Rip the enclosure apart (it's just a standard hard drive inside the enclosure) and put it in your tower. I can't get any simpler than that.

He means that you should take your HDD out of it's box and then connect it to the power connectors from your power supply in your computer. Also be sure to connect the data cable to that HDD and in the motherboard.

Cheers!

That's what i wanted to hear, i never thought there'd be a standard inside, haha, i plugged it into the computer as a normal HDD, and just kinda sticking out, for testing, but i'm not sure if there will be space for the SATA plug when I get the GTX 570, i might need another 90 degree cable in order to make everything work ><

It seems to work when plugged directly into the tower with SATA, but the problem is that if i should get it inside, i'd have to tear the tower completely apart in order to get enough space to get it where it should be.

Could it be an idea to keep the HDD standing at the bottom of the tower and then bind with with some plastic strips or what they're called, so it doesn't fall?

It doesn't matter WHERE in the computer case the HDD is located AS LONG AS it's in the position where it cannot fall. You can put the HDD is something soft like towel, stick it with something so it doesn't open and then position it at the bottom of the computer case and stick that with something too like tape so it doesn't move when you move the computer and that's it.
It really depends on you.But there are no rules WHERE HDD must be located lol.It will work wherever you put it as long as it's connected properly.

Cheers!

Uhh, i dunno if it's shown correctly when searching on the forums now, but when you have subscribed a thread and the title changes, the title remains the same under subscribed threads.
