External Harddrive for Network

My buddy told me that he bought an external harddrive that has an ethernet port and he just plugged it straight into his router. Now it's accessible on everyone of his computers!

I want to do the samething but i'm afraid that my Macbook Pro won't be able to see it due to formatting differences. Is that true? Is there a way to have all my media files on a central networking drive for my Mac and PC to read and grab data from?

This probably depends on which drive you buy. Lots of NAS (network attached storage) HDD's word with MAC....like THIS ONE for example.
